Two identical authentic items from the same year can differ in value by 10:1 or more based on condition alone. The Condition Hierarchy
Mint (M): Perfect, flawless, appears unplayed with or unused. Factory fresh. For pre-war toys, truly mint condition is extraordinarily rare — most items described as “mint” are Near Mint at best.
Near Mint (NM): Shows minimal wear, all original surfaces clean and bright, no significant damage. The practical top end of the market for most vintage Disney items.
Excellent (EX): Shows light play wear, all original parts present, colors still bright with minor dulling. The most common grade for items described as “excellent condition.”
Very Good (VG) through Poor: Progressive deterioration — noticeable wear (VG), heavy wear (Good), major damage (Fair/Poor). Values drop substantially at each grade.
Condition Value Multipliers in Practice
- Bisque figure worth $100 in Good condition: Near Mint equivalent might be $500–$800
- Animation cel worth $500 in Excellent condition: Mint equivalent of same cel might be $1,500–$2,000
- Pre-war tin toy worth $300 in Very Good: Near Mint example might be $800–$1,500
- At the high end of value: Condition multipliers become even more dramatic — a $10,000 Excellent cel might be $30,000–$50,000 in Mint
